Attacks on this boat and other events
28 Sep 1942
During the night of 27/28 Sep. 1942, U-514 carried out two successful attacks on a small convoy of four merchant ships escorted by USS Roe (DD 418) while on the surface off the Amazon estuary. At 01.10 hrs, the U-boat had been forced to dive after being fired on by the Brazilian steam merchant Imediato João Silva, but succeeded in leaving the area without being attacked by the escort.
17 Apr 1943
03.49 hrs, Bay of Biscay, outbound: a British Wellington bomber (172 Sqn RAF/S) strafed the boat and dropped two bombs. Shortly afterwards at 14.28, a British Whitley bomber (10 OTU RAF/H) located the boat and dropped four bombs. No damage from either attack. (Sources: Rohwer)
