Like many others Hans-Jürgen Auffermann went out with his first command under ever-increasing pressure from the Allies. He successfully operated his boat for almost 200 days at sea on his rather large type IXC boat U-514.
Auffermann and his entire crew was lost on 8 July 1943 when his boat was sunk by rockets from a British Liberator aircraft (Sqdn. 224/R) north-east of Cape Finisterre, Spain (Niestlé, 1998).
