  19 Sep 19402034
(0) 176° - Cape Santa Maria di Leuca - 59 miles.
At 2030 hours, a submarine was sighted at 2,000 metres, steering 170° at 1 or 2 knots.

At 2034 hours, Serpente fired a single torpedo from a bow tube at a distance of 1,000 metres. The electric firing did not work immediately and the delay of 3 or 4 seconds was enough for the torpedo to miss the target by a few metres astern.

At 2037 hours, a second torpedo was fired from a bow tube at 800 metres.

Serpente reverted course and at 2040 hours, fired a third torpedo, this time from a stern tube. After 25-30 seconds a violent shock was felt. C.C. Tognelli was under the impression that the other submarine had dived just before it was hit and this would explain why no traces of survivors or debris were found.

In fact, the "enemy" submarine was Marcantonio Colonna of the Messina Gruppo (Serpente belonged to the Taranto Gruppo). T.V. Gozzi of Colonna had observed the attack and, as his opponent was maneuvering for a stern shot, had immediately dived. A torpedo was heard passing just above her.

Curiously, C.C. Vittorio Emanuele Tognelli and several officers and ratings' names were proposed for medals for this attack.

(0) Near Gavdo island?
At 1705 hours, Serpente was proceeding at a depth of 47 metres, when hydrophone effects were heard. During the next hours, the submarine was hunted by three destroyers and heard 39 depth charges. She escaped by going down to 110 metres.

20 Dec 1940010235° 30'N, 16° 20'EAt 0100 hours, a large enemy formation was sighted at 4-5,000 metres in very rough seas (Grecale wind). It was estimated to be three cruisers and a destroyer. The range was closing.

At 0102 hours, Serpente fired two torpedoes (533mm) from bow tubes at a distance of 2,500-3,000 metres, aimed at a cruiser and possibly a TRIBAL class destroyer. The submarine dived immediately after. She had reached a depth of 35 metres when a loud explosion was heard, indicating at least one hit and perhaps two.

This was almost certainly HMS Calcutta, three sloops and one destroyer who were about 80 miles east of Malta at the time but did not observe any attack.

It has sometimes been reported that the destroyer Hyperion was sunk in this attack, but this is an error: Hyperion was reported damaged by a mine at 0157 hours on 22nd December 1940 (24 miles east of Cape Bon or in 37°04' N, 11°30' E) and finally sunk at 0500 hours on the 22nd by HMS Janus.

At 0102 hours, two warships believed to be submarine chasers were sighted. Serpente dived and took evasive action, but apparently was undetected and surfaced three hours later.

At 2200 hours, Serpente was informed of an enemy convoy proceeding to the southwest of Crete. The submarine altered course to intercept it near Cape Kutri. However, her search was believed to have failed because she cruised too far from the coast and her defective hydrophones did not help remedy the situation.
  18 Apr 19412200
(0) South of Crete.
At 2200 hours, Serpente was informed of a convoy proceeding south of Crete steering 300° to pass the southwest of the island. The submarine altered course to intercept it, but her hydrophones were not reliable and, although H.E. were heard, nothing was sighted.

Serpente lost contact with the first one, then closed the second ship at 1650 hours, at a distance of 1,000 meters. She was identified as the Vichy French Sainte Germaine (1,626 GRT, built 1919).

At 2003 hours, a 5-6000-ton tanker was sighted steering a southerly course at 12-13 knots. At 2200 hours, Serpente had closed to 1,500 meters and identified her as French.

At 0740 hours, a 700-800-ton steamer was sighted at 10-11,000, metres, steering 250° course. Serpente broke off the approach when the vessel was sighted in the process of entering Ténès harbour. Other vessels, all apparently French, were also sighted.

At 1430 hours, Serpente was informed of the presence of an enemy naval force (this was the HALBERD convoy). Because of the heavy rain, the submarine dived to 30 meteres to get better acoustic conditions for her hydrophones.

At 1540 hours, nothing could be heard and the submarine returned to periscope depth.

At 1618 hours, the upper works of what appeared to be a battleship were seen at 10,000 metres.

At 1640 hours, the formation identified as a battleship and four destroyers was attacked. Serpente fired two stern torpedoes at less than 1,000 metres at a JAVELIN class destroyer as the battleship was not in a good position for attack. At the same time, a destroyer was sighted at 1,300-1,500 metres suddenly turning toward the submarine who crash-dived. An explosion was heard after 40-50 seconds leading T.V. Ferrini to believe he had scored a hit.

Serpente was depth charged between 1703-1722 hours. Her tormentor was the destroyer HMS Lively who dropped 14 depth charges at 1705 hours and was assisted by HMS Legion for the A/S hunt. The submarine had escaped by going down to 100 metres and stopping her machines. She surfaced at 1945 hours to find that the enemy was gone.
