20 Dec 1940 | 0102 | 35° 30'N, 16° 20'E | At 0100 hours, a large enemy formation was sighted at 4-5,000 metres in very rough seas (Grecale wind). It was estimated to be three cruisers and a destroyer. The range was closing. At 0102 hours, Serpente fired two torpedoes (533mm) from bow tubes at a distance of 2,500-3,000 metres, aimed at a cruiser and possibly a TRIBAL class destroyer. The submarine dived immediately after. She had reached a depth of 35 metres when a loud explosion was heard, indicating at least one hit and perhaps two. This was almost certainly HMS Calcutta, three sloops and one destroyer who were about 80 miles east of Malta at the time but did not observe any attack. It has sometimes been reported that the destroyer Hyperion was sunk in this attack, but this is an error: Hyperion was reported damaged by a mine at 0157 hours on 22nd December 1940 (24 miles east of Cape Bon or in 37°04' N, 11°30' E) and finally sunk at 0500 hours on the 22nd by HMS Janus.
22 Dec 1940 | 0102 | 35° 30'N, 16° 20'E (0) Approximately. | At 0102 hours, two warships believed to be submarine chasers were sighted. Serpente dived and took evasive action, but apparently was undetected and surfaced three hours later.

7. | Diaspro (DS) | 21 Jul 1941 | 1458 | Cagliari | 24 Jul 1941 | 0745 | Cagliari | 352 | Patrolled off Cape Bougaroni, on parallel from 37°30'N, 06°00'E to 05°00'E, with Alagi in an adjacent area. All torpedoes expended.
22 Jul 1941 | 2307 2310 (e) | 38° 10'N, 5° 30'E | At 1005 hours, as Cape Bougaroni was in sight, information was received that, at 0850 hours, an aircraft had spotted a large naval force in 38°26' N, 03°25' E. At 1130 hours, a signal from MARICOSOM revealed that a force of one battleship, one aircraft carrier and four destroyers had been sighted at 0920 hours in 38°26' N, 03°35' E, steering 090° at 18 knots. T.V. Antonio Dotta estimated that this force could be 45 miles north of his position, at 1630 hours. He immediately altered course, expecting to reach the interception course at 1600 hours. At 1440 hours, as Diaspro was proceeding northward, an order from MARICOSOM gave her freedom of action to move outside her patrol area to intercept the enemy. At 1920 hours, a new signal from MARICOSOM reported the enemy's position at 1545 hours as 75 miles north of Cape Bougaroni, steering 090° at 20 knots. It was now described as one battleship, one aircraft carrier and seven destroyers. However, this position was only 7 miles from Diaspro at 1545 hours and, since no hydrophone noises had been picked up, Dotta estimated that the position provided by MARICOSOM was erroneous. At 1950 hours, bomb explosions could be heard to the west. At 2015 hours, Diaspro was informed by MARICOSOM that an enemy naval force had been reported at 1505 hours, 75 miles north of Cape Sigli, consisting of a battleship, an aircraft carrier, four cruisers and five destroyers. It was not clear if this was the same force or a different one. At 2200 hours, the submarine submerged briefly to listen with the hydrophones and detected numerous noises westward. All forward tubes were readied as Corallo proceeded on the surface. At 2258 hours, shadows were sighted and, two minutes later, the diesels were stopped and the electric motors switched on for a silent approach. At 2304 hours, a naval force of eight to ten ships was sighted in the process of reverting course from 090° to 270°. It could now be identified as one or two destroyers leading the formation, followed by four cruisers, other destroyers, a battleship, an aircraft carrier and one or two destroyers bringing up the rear. The speed was estimated at 10 knots and distances varied from 1,000 to 1,300 metres. At 2307 hours, a full salvo of four torpedoes was fired from the bow tubes aimed at the cruisers. They missed. T.V. Dotta believed that the very visible phosphorescence of the torpedo tracks had enabled the enemy to take avoiding action. At 2309 hours, Diaspro had reverted course to fire two stern torpedoes aimed at the battleship and aircraft carrier from 700 metres and then crash-dived. Two explosions were heard about a minute after firing leading Dotta to believe that he had scored one or perhaps both the major units. This was Force H covering the SUBSTANCE convoy, with the battle cruiser HMS Renown, the battleship HMS Nelson, the light cruiser HMS Hermione, the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal and screened by destroyers. One of these destroyers, HMAS Nestor, stationed on the starboard wing, reported two torpedoes, which were avoided. Just prior to this, two explosions had been heard which were probably torpedoes from Diaspro's first salvo, either detonating prematurely or hitting the sea bed. The destroyer now obtained an ASDIC contact at 1,700 yards and dropped a pattern of five depth charges set at medium depth, which exploded as the submarine had reached a depth of 40 metres. Another pattern of six depth charges was dropped on a second run and the same number on a third run. Nothing was seen, but there was a strong smell of oil. In the submarine, about thirty depth charges were heard from 2312 to 0050 hours on 23rd July. Although, the first pattern was close, the remainder were not and the submarine was only slightly damaged. Diaspro had dropped to a depth of 138 metres before stabilising at 116 metres. At 0330 hours, she made an enemy report and at 0557 hours sighted a squadron of destroyers apparently hunting her. Diaspro dived and proceeded to Cagliari. This is one of the rare instances, when an Italian submarine returned from a patrol in the Mediterranean having expended all her torpedoes.
8. | Diaspro (DS) | 30 Jul 1941 | 2025 | Cagliari | 6 Aug 1941 | 0650 | Cagliari | 432 | Patrolled off Cape Bougaroni on 6° E meridian. At 1335 hours on 3rd August, Diaspro was informed of a convoy of eight ships in 37°20'N, 10°45'E, on course 270°, 10 knots and moved westward with the intention to carry out a night attack. Sighted only French ships.

25 Aug 1941 | 0910 | 37° 48'N, 8° 00'E | At 0010 hours, a submarine believed to be Aradam, was sighted. As a precaution, Diaspro proceeded submerged to her patrol area, which was 25 miles away at the time and again sighted the submarine at 1013 hours.
10. | Diaspro (DS) | 12 Sep 1941 | 1355 | Cagliari | 15 Sep 1941 | 1050 | Cagliari | 359 | Patrolled east of La Galite between 37°32'N and North African coast, 08°56'E and 09°20'E.
12 Sep 1941 | 1855 1852 (e) | 38° 42'N, 9° 30'E | At 1855 hours, Diaspro was mistaken for an enemy submarine and attacked by Cant Z.506 no. 3 of 188^ Squadriglia based at Elmas. The aircraft dropped two bombs set to explode at a depth of 15 meters. The submarine was shaken, but escaped by diving to 70 meters. The aircraft observer G.M. Paolo Tavolato was reprimanded.
11. | Diaspro (DS) | 16 Sep 1941 | 2355 | Cagliari | 17 Sep 1941 | 2145 | Cagliari | 184 | Sailed for patrol off SE of Minorca to form a patrol line with Serpente but then recalled. Uneventful.
17 Sep 1941 | 1240 | At 1240 hours, the submarine Serpente was sighted at a distance 8,000 metres on opposite course. Diaspro had received the recall order but Serpente had not yet.
12. | Diaspro (DS) | 25 Sep 1941 | 1835 | Cagliari | 2 Oct 1941 | 1100 | Cagliari | 814 | Sailed with Axum, Aradam and Serpente for patrol between 39°10'N and 39°50'N, and between 06°40'E and 07°00'E on a patrol line with them. On 27th September, was moved 100 miles south (in 38°25'N then moved to 37°30'N, 07°00'E on 28th September) then off Cape Bougaroni.
29 Sep 1941 | 0617 0612 (e) | 37° 32'N, 6° 45'E | At 0617 hours, in dense rain showers, a destroyer was suddenly sighted at a distance of 250 metres. Almost at the same another large shadow appeared at 2,500-3,000 metres. Diaspro fired her two stern tubes and crash-dived. After 3 minutes a loud explosion was heard as the submarine was at a depth of 30 metres. This was the destroyer HMS Gurkha, on the port side of the screen of HMS Ark Royal, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Rodney, covering the HALBERD convoy. The destroyer sighted the torpedo wakes and managed to avoid them. At 0622 hours, she heard two explosions, which were probably the torpedoes reaching the end of their run. The Dutch destroyer HrMs Isaac Sweers joined the hunt, but did not drop any depth-charges. HMS Gurkha got a contact at 0810 hours, in 37°26' N, 07°14' E and ,dropped fourteen depth-charges. With the fleet proceeding at 17 knots on an easterly course, it could not have been the same submarine.

17 Oct 1941 | 0715-1010 | 38° 27'N, 8° 28'E | At 0700 hours, the submarine Serpente was sighted at 8,000 metres and remained in sight until 1010 hours.
20 Oct 1941 | 1900 1650 (e) | 38° 05'N, 8° 00'E | At 1900 hours, three vessels were sighted at over 10,000 metres. They were recognised as destroyers, two of the FEARLESS class and one of the JERVIS class. These were probably the light cruisers HMS Aurora and HMS Penelope and the destroyers HMS Lance and HMS Lively (Force K) proceeding to Malta. Diaspro could not close to carry out an attack.

15. | Diaspro (DS) | 7 Nov 1942 | 0145 | Trapani | 14 Nov 1942 | 1830 | Trapani | 1820,5 | Patrolled in 37°25'N, 10°15'E to attack an enemy convoy. On 8 November, moved to area between 37°00'N and 37°20'N, and between 06°00'E and 06°20'E.
8 Nov 1942 | 1158 | 35° 25'N, 10° 15'E | At 1158 hours, Diaspro collided with the submarine Alagi as they were proceeding submerge to their patrol areas. Diaspro was at a depth of 12 metres at the time and suffered only minor damages but Alagi had to return to base for repairs.
12 Nov 1942 | 0505 | 36° 46'N, 5° 06'E | At 0456 hours, a large vessel was sighted at a distance of 1,200 metres. She was estimated doing 14 knots. At 0505 hours, Diaspro fired all four bow tubes (533mm, G7e type) at a range of 800 metres, adjusted for an enemy's speed of 10 knots as the initial speed appeared to have been overestimated. However, the torpedoes had just left the tubes when the vessel altered course to port and they missed. This was probably the Dutch liner Marnix Van St. Aldegonde (19,355 GRT, built 1930) who anchored off Cape Bouak at 0800 hours coming from Cape Aokas [36°38'45" N, 05°13'54" E] where she had taken refuge the previous day. At 0510 hours, the submarine had reverted and fired a single stern torpedo from a range of 1,500 metres. At 0513 hours, a double explosion was heard. No vessels reported being torpedoed at this time.
