A U-boat wreck was located in 1998 north-west of Cherbourg and eventually identified as U-988 in 2013.
Previously recorded fate
- Sunk 29 June 1944 in the English Channel west of Guernsey, in position 49.37N, 03.41W, by depth charges from the British frigates HMS Essington, HMS Duckworth, HMS Domett and HMS Cooke, and a Liberator aircraft (Sqdn 244/L).
General notes on this boat
8 Sep 1943. On 8 Sept, 1943 U-988 had a collision with her sister ship U-983 in the Baltic Sea training waters. U-983 sank with the loss of 5 men.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-988 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
