General notes on this boat
The boat was selected for Operation Kiebitz in the fall of 1943, a daring plan to retrieve some of the most successful U-boat commanders then in captivity at Camp Bowmanville in Canada, including Otto Kretschmer. The plan did not go through as planned but U-536 made it to Canadian waters where the Canadians were waiting for him, hoping to capture his boat. Schauenburg smelled a rat and evaded the ambush aborting the mission and leaving for the Atlantic.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-536 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
