A few hours before reaching base at Lorient, U-138 encountered the British submarine HMS Tribune which fired four torpedoes at her. None hit the U-boat, which docked shortly afterwards.

Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-138 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.

There was another U-138 in World War One
