Sank on 15 February 1945 in the North Sea in the Byfjord north-west of Bergen, Norway, in position 60.26N, 05.16E, after an accident during a deep diving trial. 45 dead (all hands lost). | |||||||||

After an overhaul in the naval yard at Bergen the boat carried out diving trials in the Byfjord. After the first dive there must have been an accident aboard as U-1053 was seen to surface at a steep angle and then sank by the stern. All hands were lost, including seven engineers and foremen from the naval yard.

The wreck of U-1053 located off Bergen
On 18 March 2010 the Norwegian Navy announced they had located the wreck they believe to be the U-1053 north-west of Bergen. Photos of the wreck are available on the homepage of the Norwegian Coastal Administration: Kystverket.

This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus in March 1944.

Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-1053 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
