Fate |
Sunk on or about 28 November 1940 in the North Atlantic north-west of Tory Island, in approx. position 55.30N, 08.00W, by a mine in the British minefield SN 44. 49 dead (all hands lost). (FDS/NHB, September 1987). | |||||||||
Loss position |
U-104 sent its last radio message on 19 November 1940 from approximate position 60.30N, 02.30E while en route to its operational area in the North Atlantic. The boat was posted as missing on 30 November after repeatedly failing to report its position. However, U-104 must have been responsible for two attacks on merchant ships on 27 November that brought her very close to the British barrage SN 44, which had been laid on 8 November 1940 north-west of Tory Island.
Previously recorded fate
- Sunk on 21 Nov, 1940 northwest of Ireland, in position 56.28N, 14.13W, by depth charges from the British corvette HMS Rhododendron. (Postwar assessment)
Notes. This attack was actually against U-103 inflicting no damage.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-104 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.

There was another U-104 in World War One
That boat was launched from its shipyard on 3 Jul 1917 and commissioned into the Imperial Navy on 12 Aug 1917. The Naval war in WWI was brought to an end with the Armistice signed on 11 Nov, 1918. Read about SM U 104 during WWI.
