Harald Jürst joined the Reichsmarine in 1932. He served as a Watch Officer (WO) on the U-36 from Dec 1936 or early 1937 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
Kptlt. Harald Jürst commanded the small "duck" type IIC boat U-59 from 4 Mar 1939 to 17 Jul 1940 (Busch & Röll, 1999). He went out on 8 patrols with the boat, spending 113 days at sea. He was successful with this boat, sinking 14 ships (13,382 GRT) (Rohwer, 1998).
From July to Aug 1940 Jürst went through U-boat familiarization (Baubelehrung) to prepare him for his command of a new boat, this time the much larger type IX boats (Busch & Röll, 1999).
On 19 Aug 1940 Kptlt. Harald Jürst commissioned the new type IXB boat U-104 at Bremen. After brief training in the Baltic Jürst took the boat our from Kiel on 12 Nov 1940 (Busch & Röll, 1997).
On 27 Nov 1940, during its first patrol, U-104 sank the motor tanker Charles F. Meyer (10,516 GRT) and damaged the steam merchant Diplomat (8,240 GRT) (Rohwer, 1998). After this the boat went missing from 28 Nov north-west of Ireland in approximate position 55.30N, 08.00W. There is a chance he was lost to minefield SN 44 off Tory Island (Niestlé, 1998).
