SC-95
Sydney CB to UK (North Atlantic)14 Aug 1942 - 16 Aug 1942
The Convoy | |
First sighting | On 14 Aug 1942 by U-705 |
Escorts | American escort group A-3 (Paul Heineman) consisting of Coast Guard cutter Spencer, four-stack destroyer Schenck and four Canadian and two British corvettes. |
U-boats | |
The battle | The convoy was spotted by the new outbound U-boat U-705 while joining wolf pack Lachs looking for westbound convoy ON-120. Only few boats managed to reach attack positions (U-705 sank one, U-605 missed freighter and U-256 also missed a freighter). U-256 was shelled by an escort but escaped. Operations against SC-95 was surprisingly cancelled the next day in order to search for westbound (and thus empty) convoy ON-120. |
