18.41 hrs, mid Atlantic: a British Swordfish aircraft (FAA Sqdn 811/M) from HMS Biter (D 97), escorting convoy HX 237 strafed U-403 and dropped two bombs. No damage. (Sources: Rohwer)
30 Jul 1943
The boat was proceeding on the surface with U-43 when Avenger and Wildcat aircraft from the US escort carrier USS Santee. Both boats dived: two depth charges were dropped on U-403, and a Fido homing torpedo was launched at U-43. U-403 escaped, but U-43 was lost with her crew of 55. (Sources: Blair, vol 2, page 397)

An attack on U-403 on 18 Aug. 1943 in the Atlantic off Dakar in position 14.11N, 17.40W, in which a British Hudson bomber (Sqdn. 200/O) dropped depth charges, was believed to have sunk her, but in fact caused only minor damage.
The boat was sunk later the same day in another attack.

10 May 1943. The boat had a gunnery duel with the Dutch merchant ship Dexterous.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-403 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
