Hans Diederich Duis joined the Kriegsmarine in 1939 and went though officer and then U-boat training until May 1941. He then trained as a watch officer on the most successful U-boat of the war, U-48, until November 1941. U-48 had been retired from combat when Duis joined her in the 26th Flotilla. He then went through more courses from Dec 1941 to May 1942 before he joined the Milch Cow U-462 in June 1942 for a two month stint as a Watch Officer while the large boat finished her trial and work-up process.
Duis then went to the training boat U-351 in July 1942 and served as a Watch Officer on her until April 1943. He then served as First Watch Officer (IWO) on the combat boat U-365 for a full year from June 1943. On this boat starting from Feb 1944 he went out on 4 patrols.
Starting in June 1944 he took his U-boat commander training and further courses until Dec 1944 when he was given command of the highly experimental Walter boat U-792. Duis scuttled his boat on 4 May 1945 near Rendsburg (see Operation Regenbogen. The British later raised the boat and used for trials.
Hans Diederich Duis was detained by the Allies after the war but was released on 9 Sept 1945.
Hans Diederich Duis died in a car accident on the autobahn in late 1992 or early 1993.
