Wolf-Dietrich Damerow joined the Kriegsmarine in Oct 1937 as part of Crew 37b. He served as a Watch Officer (WO) with the VP-boot (Vorposten, flak ship) flotilla from May 1940 to Sept 1941 when he started U-boat training.
On completing U-boat training in March 1942, he joined the future crew of U-521 for Baubelehrung (U-boat construction familiarization) before being assigned as the new boat's IWO (1st Watch Officer) in June 1942. Damerow served on U-521 until March 1943, when he began U-boat commander training.
Damerow finished his U-boat commander course and took command of U-106 on 20 June 1943, becoming the third commander of this combat seasoned boat.
The boat was sunk six days into its first patrol under Damerow on 2 Aug 1943. Damerow had called for assistance when being attacked for the second day running by Allied aircraft, and was sent JU 88 bombers and torpedo boats. The boats rescued Damerow and 35 of his crew, but 22 men died (Blair, 1998).
Wolf-Dietrich Damerow died in a military hospital at Eberswalde on 21 May 1944.
