Victor Vogel joined the German Navy (Reichsmarine) in 1932. He served in anti-submarine and mine-sweeping flotillas fro July 1939 to March 1941, his last command being the 1st and 3rd Flotillas.
In March 1941 Vogel joined the U-boat force and finished his training in June when he went straight to the U-boat Commander course at the 24th Flotilla, finishing in August 1941.
On 18 Sept 1941 Kapitänleutnant Victor Vogel took command of the new boat U-588 in Hamburg after having spent the last few weeks in U-boat familiarization (Baubelehrung) at the yard. With this boat he would go out on 4 patrols, sinking 7 ships (31,492 GRT) and damaging one more (7,460 GRT).
Kptlt. Victor Vogel was killed along with his entire crew of 46 men when U-588 was sunk in the North Atlantic on 31 July 1942 by depth charges from the Canadian corvette HMCS Wetaskiwin and Canadian destroyer HMCS Skeena (Niestlé, 1998).
