Notes on event

At 22.03 hours on 23 May 1942 the unescorted Margot (Master Henry Bell Collins) was hit by one torpedo from U-588 southeast of Philadelphia. After 22.05 hours, the ship was attacked with gunfire until she sank at 00.20 hours on 24 May. One crew member was lost. The survivors were questioned by the Germans and a bottle of rum was given to them. The master, 38 crew members and five gunners were picked up four days later by the Swedish motor merchant Sagoland and landed at New York.
