After being attacked by a British aircraft the boat dived to 160m (525 ft). Minor damage.

Depth charging by British destroyers HMS Echo and HMS Wanderer forced the boat down to 170m (557ft), by far the deepest a U-boat had ever gone at that time, before she managed to escape. (Sources: Blair, vol 1, page 119)

The wreck was located on 3 March 1993 by the Norwegian submarine Skolpen. The boat is lying at a depth of 300 meters.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-49 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.

There was another U-49 in World War One
