General notes on this boat
3 Jun 1945. The crew of U-1277 disembarked from the scuttled boat in rubber dinghies, landing on the beach at Angeiras north of Oporto on 3 June 1945. They were then interned by Portuguese authorities in the Castelo de Sao Jose da Foz in Oporto, and a few days later handed over to a British warship in Lisbon. They were not released from POW camp until 1947.
Schnorchel-fitted U-boat
This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus and sailed equipped with it in April 1945 but it was of course installed prior to that date.
Read more about the Schnorchel and see list of fitted boats.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-1277 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
