Loss position

View the 1 war patrol

The boat reported for the last time on 23 Oct, 1944 reporting troubles with its Schnorchel equipment while enroute to her patrol area off Canada. She did not answer any radio calls after that date and was listed as lost missing 28 Oct, 1944.

General notes on this boat

There have been reports (probably originating in 1993) that the boat has been found in 41ft of water only 4 miles off Cape Cod, USA. According to those reports the boat was sunk by US Navy aircraft from nearby Hyannis on October 28, 1944.

This is not confirmed as far as we know and in fact extremely doubtful. We'll post it here when we learn more about its fate.

Schnorchel-fitted U-boat

This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus but the date of fitting or sailing date with the equipment is unknown.

Read more about the Schnorchel and see list of fitted boats.

Men lost from U-boats

Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-1226 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
