Fate

Scuttled at 2230hrs on 6 May 1945 in the Kattegat north of Hjelm Island, in position 56.14,2N, 10.51,2E, after being damaged by depth charges from a British Liberator aircraft (86 Sqn RAF/Z) on 5 May. 44 survivors (no casualties). (FDS/NHB and Axel Niestlé, June 1986).

Final location

On 5 May 1945, U-1008 was damaged by depth charges from a British Liberator aircraft (86 Sqn RAF/Z, pilot F/Lt J.T. Lawrence) in the Kattegat. The boat was en route from Sonderburg, Denmark to Norway and the crew decided the next day to scuttle it.

Previously recorded fate

  • Sunk 6 May, 1945 at 1839hrs in the Skagerak northeast of Skagen Horn, Denmark, in position 57.52N, 10.49E, by depth charges from a British Liberator aircraft (Sqdn. 86/G). (Postwar assessment)
    Notes. This attack however resulted in the sinking of U-3523
