Fate |
Sunk on 16 October 1944 in the North Atlantic south-east of Faeroe Islands, in position 60.59N, 04.49W, by depth charges and gunfire from the Canadian frigate HMCS Annan. 6 dead and 44 survivors. | |||||||||
Loss position |
HMCS Annan dropped depth charges on a contact which was initally believed not to be an U-boat and the ship returned to the 6th EG, but HMCS Loch Achanalt then also made contact and ordered the frigate to attack again. U-1006 had been badly damaged by the depth charges and was forced to surface. They fired a torpedo at the approaching escort, but it detonated prematurely close to the ship. HMCS Annan then illuminated the scene and opened fire at the boat, which returned fire for a short time but had no chance. U-1006 was sunk with two depth charges after the crew abandoned ship.
Schnorchel-fitted U-boat
This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus and sailed equipped with it in October 1944 but it was of course installed prior to that date.
Read more about the Schnorchel and see list of fitted boats.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-1006 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
