15 Jun 1942. U-83 rescued all six crewmen of the drifting Dornier Do24T2 WNr 49 (7. Seenotstaffel, CM+IO) and a fighter pilot in the Mediterranean Sea about 60 miles north of Tobruk at 2300hrs. Earlier that day the flying boat had rescued Lt Heinrich Hesse, pilot of the Messerschmitt Bf109F-4/Trop WNr 10163 (7./JG 53, White 6) which had been shot down in aerial combat on 14 February, but crashed on take-off and was scuttled by the U-boat after all men were taken off.
