Hans-Adolf Engel served as a Watch Officer on U-83 from Feb 1941 to July 1942. He then underwent U-boat Commander training with the 24th (Training) Flotilla at Memel and Baubelehrung (construction familiarization) for U-273 at Bremen, before commissioning her on 21 Oct 1942. He commanded U-273 as part of the 8th (Training) Flotilla until 1943, when he transferred to Neustadt to become an instructor in the U-boat training division.

He ended the war as a group officer at Marineschule Flensburg-Mürwik (Naval Academy).

After the war Kptlt. Engel joined the Bundesmarine (Federal German Navy), and retired with the rank of Flottillenadmiral (Commodore or Rear Admiral).
