General Events during this patrol
1943
7 Oct 1943. U-703 rescued three survivors from Hope Island in the Barents Sea. The three people (two men and a woman) were the last survivors from the Soviet steamer Dekabrist, which had been sunk by German Ju-88 aircraft on 5 Nov, 1942, nearly a year earlier. The entire crew was originally shipwrecked on this island. In May 1943 they were discovered by an He-111 aircraft and on 24 July U-354 took the ship's master aboard as prisoner, leaving the remaining survivors behind but providing food and vitamin tablets. When U-703 reached the island in September, only three of those stranded were still alive. The U-boat crew enjoyed watching them, with the help of lots of food and care, slowly return to human civilization after enduring terrible hardship for nearly a year.
