Royal House Order of Hohenzollern
Königlicher Hausorden von Hohenzollern
This was an order of chivalry of the House of Hohenzollern (a noble family and royal dynasty of Prussia, Germany and Romania). The photo shows the Knight’s Cross with Swords version. The medal came in four variants with the Grand Commander the highest ranked.
The Ritterkreuz of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern effectively was the intermediate award for officers between the Iron Cross First Class and the Pour Le Mérite in World War I. All the of the awards to U-boat officers were of this grade with swords (war merit award) with a single exception. Paul König, for his service as the commander of the merchant U-boat Deutschland, was awarded the Ritterkreuz of the order without swords. In addition to the U-boat commanders listed below, two LIs were awarded the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern: Hans Fechter of U 35 and Paul Rhinow of U 57. A number of flotilla and higher commanders and staff officers associated with U-boats also received the Königlicher Hausorden von Hohenzollern. Some 320 naval officers in total were awarded the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern during World War I. This includes a small number of army officers serving with the Marine Corp Flandern. |
