On 9 November, 1918, a mere 2 days before the Armistice, UB 50 sank the old British battleship HMS Brittania with a torpedo hit (2 earlier torpedoes had barely missed). The battleship suffered an explosion of cordite and sank 3 hours later despite valiant efforts to save her.
