Heinz Otto Schultze was the son of Otto Schultze, commander of SM U-63 in World War I, who sank 52 ships with a total of 129,540 tons, and was decorated with the Pour le merite.
Heinz Otto Schultze began his naval career in April 1934 and joined the U-boat force in May 1937. After almost two years as Watch Officer on U-31 he commanded school boats in 1940 and 1941 before commissioning U-432 in April 1941.
Over seven patrols, mostly in the North Atlantic and on the US east coast, he sank many ships and was decorated with the Knights Cross. He left U-432 in February 1942 and a month later commissioned the type IX U-boat U-849.
Schultze died when his U-boat was sunk with all hands on 25 November 1943 in the South Atlantic by depth charges from an American B-24 Liberator bomber (Niestlé, 1998).
