Hans Johannsen joined the Navy in January 1935. Since October 1935 he served on several U-boat on technical positions. Some days before U-96 gone on the maiden patrol, Hans Johannsen came on board. He took part on the following eight patrols, and managed for some cases the U-boat ready for action after badly damages. Buchheim described him in his novel Das Boot as 'Johann'.
In August 1942 Johannsen left U-96 and was in the next months on some officer courses, before he became in June 1943 the leading engineer (LI) on the new commissioned U-boat U-802. After 4 patrols mostly in the North Atlantic and the St. Lawrence Gulf area U-802 surrendered on 11th May 1945 in Loch Eriboll. Oblt. (Ing) Johannsen spent more than 3 years in British captivity.
