Karl-Heinz Raabe joined the Kriegsmarine in 1938. He served with minesweeping flotillas (44th, 14th and 44th again) from Aug 1940 to Jan 1943, when he joined the U-boat force.
From Jan to Sept 1943 Karl-Heinz Raabe went through U-boat training, including a Commander course, spending the last month on U-boat construction familiarization (Baubelehrung) for his first command.
Raabe commissioned the type VIIC U-boat school boat U-1161 on 27 Sept 1943 and joined the 18th (Training) Flotilla in Jan 1945. He commanded another school boat, the former combat boat U-1007, from Feb to April 1945.
