Kapitän zur See Hans Ibbeken was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to depart on patrol when he took his boat, U-178, out from Kiel, Germany on 8 Sept 1942. Ibbeken was almost 43 years old at the time. He returned to base 125 days later on 10 Jan 1943 having sunk 6 ships for over 53,000 tons.
