Günter Unverzagt joined the Kriegsmarine in 1939. He went through U-boat training from May 1941 to Jan 1942, then served as a section leader with 2nd ULD (U-Boots-Lehr-Division, training division) Jan - Sept 1942 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
From Oct to Nov 1942 he attended U-boat construction familiarization (Baubelehrung) to prepare for service on a new type VIIC U-boat being built at Lübeck. U-307 was commissioned by Ltn. Friedrich-Georg Herrle on 18 Nov with Unverzagt as 1st Watch Officer (I WO) (Busch & Röll, 1999). Unverzagt went on four war patrols in her, all in Arctic and northern waters, spending 123 days at sea (Busch & Röll, 1997).
Günter Unverzagt took command of his own boat, U-965, from Klaus Ohling on 7 Jun 1944. He took her on six patrols (121 days at sea), all except the last in northern waters, harassing convoys to Russia (Busch & Röll, 1997).
On 5 March 1945 U-965 sailed from Trondheim, Norway on her last patrol, heading southwest towards the British Isles. She was was sunk with all hands (51 dead) on 30 March 1945, north of Scotland in position 58.19N 05.31W, by depth charges from the British frigates HMS Rupert and HMS Conn (Niestlé, 1998).
