The sinking of U-628
1405hrs, NW of Cape Ortegal, outbound: British Liberator FL963 (224 Sqn RAF/J, pilot S/L P.J. Cundy, DFC) dropped 18 35lb A/S bombs on an initial attack run (the first use of this new weapon), then followed up with four depth charges. Survivors were seen in the water after U-628 sank, but none were rescued. Despite flak hits to a fuel tank and the fin, rudder and starboard wing, the aircraft returned to St. Eval to make a safe landing. (Sources: Franks/Zimmerman)
