1 Aug 1940
16.02 hrs, North Sea, East of Scotland: Dutch submarine O-21 (Lt. Cm. J.F. Van Dulm) sighted U-60 (Schnee) en route for Bergen. Thirteen minutes later, O-21 fired two torpedoes from 2000m (2,187 yds), but both missed. U-60 was unaware of the attack. Later that day at 18.00 hrs, O-22 (Lt. Cm. J.W. Ort), patrolling north of her sister ship, also sighted U-60, but the range was too great for an attack. On the evening of the 2nd, U-60 was attacked off Hagesund by German Ju 88 aircraft of KG30 flying from Stavanger, Norway to raid the Orkneys, but the boat suffered no damage.
