The boat was orderd to lay mines off Gibraltar, but patrolling destroyers and very calm weather prevented this on 8 November. Afterwards U-26 entered the Mediterranean as first German U-boat during WW2 and operated in the Alboran Sea for 10 days before leaving the Mediterranean again. It was the only German U-boat that passed the Strait of Gibraltar in both directions, all other U-boats that entered the Mediterranean afterwards did not return to the Atlantic.
