Operation Deadlight Expedition II

by Innes McCartney

Day Two: 5 May, 2002

Target:
U-1009
Depth: Weather and sea conditions:
57m Wind 2-3, fair and sunny - 20 underwater visibility.

Diving report:
This wreck is quite broken. A complete contrast from yesterdays, which is only three miles distant. The conning tower area is peppered with shell holes.

The top section of the schnorchel mast lies on the sand. The majority of the superstructure has come away, as have the bow tubes. Interestingly, the dry locker for the 88mm cannon is in place, although it is almost certain that U-1009 was never fitted with one.

We assume that the identity of this wreck is ok, since it is only a few hundred metres from the official sinking position form Operation Deadlight. Its proximity to Inistrahull makes it likely that the position fixing was fairly accurate.

We made a second dive on the liner Laurentic. Also a great wreck.

Comments:
We have a magnetometer tomorrow - so we will be searching for U-boats we were unsuccessful in locating last year.
