Viktor Graf von Reventlow-Criminil joined the Kriegsmarine in 1936, and was part of the Olympia Crew.

He commissioned the type VIIC/41 boat U-1017 on 13 April 1944 and began working-up exercises in the Baltic. After only two months he was assigned to the K-Verband (midget submarine group), where he commanded K-flotilla 415 from July to Sept 1944. Afterwards he served as a staff officer on Midget Subs Command North, amongst other duties, until the German surrender in May 1945. (Busch & Röll, 1999)

The Reventlows are members of the Danish aristocracy, and after the war Graf von Reventlow-Criminil became a farmer and local councillor representing Danish minority politics in Schleswig-Holstein. He emigrated to Canada in 1953.
