Gerhard Remus joined the Kriegsmarine in 1936, and was part of the Olympia Crew. He served on the light cruiser Emden June 1938 - Oct 1940 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
Oblt. Gerhard Remus went through U-boat training from Nov 1940 to March 1941. From April to Oct 1941 he was 1st Watch Officer (IWO) on U-652 under Oblt. Georg-Werner Fraatz. He served on the boat for two war patrols, during which one small ship was sunk and three damaged with a total of 20,825 tons. He left the boat in Oct 1941 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
From Oct to Nov 1941 Remus went through U-boat Commander training before taking command of U-34, a school boat retired from active service, on 20 Nov 1941. He left in June 1942 to take command of U-566. After two patrols in the Atlantic he left to lead the torpedo attack section of the 24th (Training) Flotilla. From Oct 1944 to Feb 1945 he commanded the 24th (Training) Flotilla. He then joined the torpedo attack section of the 26th (Training) Flotilla until April 1945 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
At the end of the war Remus took over the type XXIII Elektro U-boat U-2364, which he scuttled in Gelting Bay on 5 May 1945 (Niestlé, 1998). For the last few days of the war he joined the staff of U-boat Command. Kplt. Gerhard Remus was detained by the Allies, but released on 3 Aug 1945 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
