Notes on event | At 19.08 hours on 28 August 1942, U-566 fired a spread of three torpedoes at convoy SL-119 west-northwest of Lisbon, heard three detonations and sinking noises and claimed two steamers sunk. The ships hit were Zuiderkerk and City of Cardiff. The City of Cardiff (Master Robert Leonard Stewart) remained afloat, but foundered two days later. 19 crew members and two gunners were lost. The master, 57 crew members and five gunners were picked up by HMS Rochester (L 50) (Cdr C.B. Allen, RN) and landed at Londonderry. | ||
