Wilhelm-Heinrich, Graf von Pückler und Limpurg joined the Reichsmarine in 1934. After time on the sailing school ship Gorch Fock and the light cruiser Emden he served on minesweepers, commanding the 2nd R-flotille May 1940 - Jan 1941. He began U-boat training in Jan 1941, and served as I WO (1st Watch Officer) on U-101 (Fraunheim) June - Nov 1941.

He commissioned his own boat, the type VIIC U-boat U-381, on 25 Feb 1942. After three patrols in the North Atlantic, she was listed as missing on 10 May 1943. Her last reported position was south of Greenland, on 9 May. There is no explanation for her loss.
