Günter Behnisch joined the Kriegsmarine in late 1939 as part of crew XII/39. He completed his U-boat training in March 1944. He served as the First Watch Officer (IWO) on the Mediterranean boat U-952 during April – August 1944 where he went on 1 war patrol. He then took the U-boat Commander course and the Baubelehrung (construction commander) for type XXIII elektro boats from August to October 1944.

Behnisch was given his first U-boat command, U-2337, on 4 Oct 1944. He commanded the boat, making no war patrols, until the end of the war when he surrendered his boat at Kristiansand Sud, Norway.

Günter Behnisch was detained by the Allies after the war before being released in 1947.

Post war career

Günter Behnisch became a very successful and famous architect after the war. He studied at the Technical University at Stuttgart from 1947 to 1952. He opened up his own office in 1952 and operated it with Bruno Lampart until 1956. In 1956 he founded the architect firm Behnisch & Partner was founded and it still exist today as Behnisch Architechts (behnish.de).

Among his works are the stadium for the Olympic Games in Munich (1967-1972), the German parliament in Bonn and the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
