Hans-Gerold Hauber joined the Reichsmarine in III/34. He served as a Watch Officer (WO) in the 14th Minesweeping Flotilla from Sep 1940 top Jan 1941. He was a training officer with the Naval Training Inspectorate from Apr to Nov 1941 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
From Nov 1941 to July 1942 he was a Watch Officer with the 6th patrol boat flotilla before rejoining the Naval Training Inspectorate from July 1942 to Nov 1942. He joined the 14th patrol boat flotilla in Nov 1942 and served there until March 1943 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
In Dec 1943 he was sent as the First Watch Officer (1WO) to the veteran type IXC boat U-170 (Kptlt. Günther Pfeffer) (Busch & Röll, 1999). Hauber went out on one 109 day long patrol to the US east coast with the boat from 9 Feb to 27 May 1944. They sank no ships and safely returned to Lorient, France (Busch & Röll, 1997).
Oblt. Hans-Gerold Hauber then took command of the boat at Lorient in July 1944 (Busch & Röll, 1999). Hauber took the boat out from Lorient on 1 Aug to a long patrol to the African west coast. They went as far south as Liberia and Sierra Leone. The boat was attacked several times during the patrol and returned with minor damages to Norway on 30 Nov and then finally at Flensburg, Germany on 4 Dec 1944 after 126 days at sea (Busch & Röll, 1997).
Hauber commanded the U-170 until its surrender at Horten, Norway on 9 May 1945 (Niestlé, 1998). He was detained by the Allies until May 1947 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
