Ruprecht Fischer joined the Kriegsmarine in 1937 and belonged to Crew 37a. He served in minesweeping flotillas July 1940 - Jan 1943, first the 14th and then the 22nd. He joined the U-boat force Feb 1943. He began a U-boat Commander Course with the 24th (Training) Flotilla in July 1943, then Baubelehrung (U-boat construction familiarization) before commissioning U-244 on 9 Oct 1943. He commanded the boat until 9 April 1945, taking her on three war patrols into the North Atlantic.
Fischer was lost while onboard as passenger when U-804 was sunk in the Kattegat en route to Norway.
