Hermann Zander joined the Kriegsmarine in 1929. He served as a torpedo officer on the light cruiser Nürnberg from Nov 1941 to May 1943. He then went through U-boat training until Oct 1943, followed by U-boat Commander training with the 3rd ULD (U-Boots-Lehr-Division, training section), then the 23rd (Training) Flotilla and 24th (Training) Flotilla until Jan 1944 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
Oblt. Zander attended U-boat construction familiarization (Baubelehrung) at Danzig Jan - March 1944 to prepare him for his own command of a new U-boat. On 2 March 1944 he commissioned the type VIIC U-boat U-1205 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
U-1205 never saw active service, and Kptlt. Zander scuttled her during Operation Regenbogen at Kiel on 3 May 1945 (Niestlé, 1998).
