U-731 3 Oct 1942 30 Nov 1943   2 patrols (110 days)

Johann Heinrich Werner Techand went through U-boat training in the first half of 1941 before joining U-135 as 1st Watch Officer (IWO) from August 1941 to July 1942. He then attended U-boat Commander School, and after U-boat construction familiarization (Baubelehrung) from Sept 1942, commissioned the new type VIIC U-boat U-731 on 3 Oct 1942.

Werner Techand was 24 years old when he took his boat out for its first patrol on 29 April 1943.

On Oct 4 1943 Techand and five of his crew were wounded in an attack by a Hudson bomber. Shortly afterwards Techand spotted convoy SC 143 and vectored in several other U-boats.

After completing two patrols Werner Techand left U-731 on 30 Nov 1943 to join the staff of the 1st Flotilla. He served in various positions there until the end of the war.

(His last name appears in many sources as Teschand (with an s), but the correct spelling is Techand.)
