Walter Boldt joined the Kriegsmarine in 1939. From Aug 1942 to Jan 1944 he served as First Watch Officer (1WO). During Jan to March 1944 he went through U-boat commander training at the 3rd ULD and 23rd flotilla.

On 1 April 1944 he took command of U-720. He left the boat on 22 Nov and served with the 21st Flotilla until Jan 1945. In Feb he became an instructor with 1st ULD until March, when he underwent U-boat commander sea training on the new type XXI Elektro boat U-3033 from 8 March until 4 May 1945, when the boat was scuttled.

He suffered an accidental death in an explosion onboard the ship Danube at Mürwik, Flensburg, Germany.
