0606 (e)
44° 17'N, 33° 13'EAt 0500 hours, a Soviet submarine was sighted dead ahead at distance of 1,800 metres. It appeared to be of the CHUKA ([SHCHUKA] class and about to submerge.

At 0502 hours, two torpedoes (450mm) were fired with an interval of 8 seconds. The first was a surface runner. The enemy submarine was now diving and CB 2 did the same. One explosion was heard after 100 seconds and it was believed to have been sunk.

The target was the small Soviet submarine A-4 (Senior Lieutenant Sergey Artemyevich Trofimchuk) and she was missed. At 0606C hours, the Russians heard an explosion which probably the same explosion heard in CB 2 and was probably that of a torpedo exploding prematurely.

The midget submarine turned away but was hit by about 20 rounds. Fortunately, none of the crew was hit. A light machine-gun was used to keep the two small boats at a distance. At 0830 hours, CB 2 reported the incident and at 1010 hours, an Italian MAS was sighted on its way to look for the two boats.

These were actually two small boats from a reconnaissance detachment from SOR (Sevastopol Defence District), returning after an unsuccessful landing behind enemy lines.

Goffredo Mameli observed an explosion 250-300 metres to starboard side and, shortly after, another about 250 metres to port. The escorting destroyer Grecale signalled that they were under air attack, but these were actually premature explosions from torpedoes fired by U-616 (OL Siegfried Koitschka). The Italians vessels were unaware that they had been under attack from a U-boat and, for security reasons, were diverted to Algiers.
