The model had a horseshoe shaped life jacket molded to it on the top, right hand side of the conning tower's ladder. It may have been hooked onto that position when the submarine was surfaced but removed when submerged. It was deleted in this case. The periscopes and snorkel etc. were painted a dirty steel color. The tips were painted flat black to resemble the synthetic rubber coating used to minimize enemy radar detection by absorbing the radar signals.
