Notes on event | At 03.54 hours on 18 February 1940 HMS Daring (H 16) (Cdr S.A. Cooper, RN), escorting convoy HN-12, was hit by two torpedoes from U-23 about 40 miles east of the Pentland Firth and sank immediately. The commander, eight officers and 147 crew members were lost. One officer and three ratings were picked up from a Carley float by HMS Inglefield (D 02) (Capt P. Todd, RN) and landed at Scapa Flow on 20 February. One rating was rescued from wreckage by HMS Ilex (D 61) (LtCdr P.L. Saumarez, RN), assisted by HMS Thistle (N 24) (Cdr R.W. Stirling-Hamilton, RN) and landed at Rosyth on 19 February. | ||
