Personal information
Victor Haggith of Wembley had run off at the age of 14 and joined the Merchant Navy instead of going to school one day. Shortly after his 15th birthday he experienced two sinkings within a week, surviving the sinking of Polyphemus in the lifeboat in charge of the chief officer and being rescued by the Maria Amelia. The authorities eventually discovered that he had lied about his age and later sent him around the world as "the boy hero" to sell war bonds.
