The British merchant ship Hatarana, that was torpedoed and damaged north-east of the Azores in position 41°07'N, 20°32'W by German U-boat U-214 was scuttled by gunfire from the British corvette HMS Pentstemon (Lt.Cdr. J. Byron, DSC, RNR (retired)), which also picked up 20 survivors and landed them at Londonderry.
Destroyer HMS Keppel (D 84 / I 84)
22 Sep 1943 (position 54.36, -36.25)
German U-boat U-229 was sunk in the North Atlantic south-east of Cape Farewell, Greenland, in position 54°36'N, 36°25'W, by depth charges, gunfire and ramming from the British destroyer HMS Keppel (Lt.Cdr. J. Byron, DSC, RNR). HMS Keppel then struggled to Newfoundland for repairs to her bows.
